ODE TO THE COFFEE BEAN
By Melissa Meyers
Certainly not the plump lima bean,
or the little red kidney but,
the one that grinds the best,
harvested when ripe as a cherry,
woefully prone to leaf rust and other maladies,
which can only lead to empty cups.
So here, hooray, to Fair Trade,
for global contributions lending to
exports of a morning rush,
cappuccino, dollop with foam,
espresso, a determined drink,
Latte, iced or hot,
Let’s mix it up,
Add a flavor,
Serve it black, serve it mocha,
infuse with vanilla bean,
top with cream, whipped or not,
extra shots, yes please,
brought to mornings everywhere,
best served in bright ceramic cups,
Fill it up.
